London - UPI - Former Syrian Vice President Abdul Halim Khaddam called on President Barack Obama to focus on issues of democracy, freedom and respect for human rights in the eastern region, including Syria, likening the ruling regime in his country to that of Zimbabwe.

Khaddam said in a letter addressed to Obama yesterday, “In your speech during the swearing-in of the presidency, you expressed a new vision for the role of the United States in the world and focused on the set of values and principles established by the founding leaders of the United States, and thus you gave the people of the world hope for a radical change in the foreign policies of the United States.” “It is based on the set of principles and values contained in your historic speech.”
He added: “There are dictatorial regimes that control people’s lives and destinies, and one of these areas is Syria, where it is controlled by a regime that deprives Syrians of their civil rights guaranteed by the United Nations Charter, first and foremost, their right to practice democracy and enjoy freedom, due to its dictatorial nature and the practice of all types of repression, including This includes imprisonment, torture, and deprivation of civil rights.”

He compared the regime of President Bashar al-Assad to that of Zimbabwe “and other totalitarian regimes,” referring to the rule of Robert Mugabe, whom the West considers a “dictator.” He added, “The Syrians have great hope that your administration will focus on issues of democracy, freedom, and respect for human rights in the eastern region, because the peace that you announced you are working to achieve is not achieved by totalitarian regimes that do not establish peace with their people, so how can they establish it with their enemies?”
