Former Syrian Vice President Abdel Halim Khaddam characterized the current events in Syria as normal, following years of corruption and oppression.

In an exclusive interview with Radio Sawa, he stated, “After more than 40 years of injustice, discrimination, denial of rights, persecution, and impoverishment, it is only natural for circumstances to evolve, leading the Syrian people to demand freedom and democracy.”

Khaddam emphasized, “The Syrians have the right to aspire to build a democratic state after enduring more than 40 years under a corrupt and oppressive dictatorship. Thus, the Syrian people’s movement is a necessary and natural outcome, and I believe it will persist until their aspiration is achieved, namely the transformation of Syria from a state governed by a dictator to a state governed by the people through a constitution that upholds democracy and the peaceful transition of power.”

Addressing the claims made by the ruling regime in Syria about the existence of an external conspiracy, the former Vice President responded, “The real conspiracy is what the regime is perpetrating against the Syrian people.”
