Khaddam’s statement came in remarks to reporters following his meeting yesterday with a delegation representing Iraqi tribes. He said the discussions focused on the need to rebuild the Iraqi state in a way that ensures the participation of all Iraqis in managing their country’s affairs and determining their future. This includes holding elections under United Nations supervision to select a legislative council tasked with drafting a constitution for the country.
He pointed out that “there is national consensus on the necessity of preserving national unity, and there are no differences that could shake this unity. Any disruption in the process of national reconstruction will have serious consequences for all Iraqis, regardless of their backgrounds or groups.”
He added, “Syria is working hard to provide all possible assistance to the Iraqi people to alleviate their suffering, and we hope that the Iraqi people will achieve their national interests as soon as possible.”
In response to a question about the establishment of a federation in Iraq, especially in the north, Khaddam said, “Everything related to Iraq’s structure, whether political, legal, or constitutional, will be decided by the Iraqi people through elections. No one can adopt any stance or take such steps before the Iraqi people have their say.”
