Former Syrian Vice President Abdel Halim Khaddam has called upon the Arab League to expedite its punitive measures against Syria, similar to what was done with Libya, and has advocated for foreign intervention in his country.

According to statements attributed to Khaddam in the Algerian newspaper Al-Shorouq, he stated, “The decision to suspend Syria’s membership in the Arab League is a positive but insufficient step as it grants Bashar al-Assad an extended timeframe to remain in power, without resorting to any meaningful changes.”

Khaddam urged the Arab League to present its resolutions to the UN Security Council and to pursue the same course of action taken against Libya in March last year.

Furthermore, he added, “The Arab initiative did not align with the aspirations of the Syrian people. It failed to address their primary objective, which is the overthrow of the regime. Instead, it provides Bashar al-Assad with an opportunity to continue holding power.”
