During the meeting, Syrian Vice President Abdel Halim Khaddam engaged in discussions with a delegation of Iraqi tribes. He reiterated Syria’s unwavering support for the Iraqi people in their quest for liberation, independence, and the construction of their state across their national territory. Additionally, he expressed the urgent need to alleviate their suffering and pain caused by the occupation of their land. Khaddam emphasized the paramount importance of national unity and cohesion among Iraqis to confront the challenges currently faced by Iraq.

Khaddam further emphasized that the destiny of Iraq, the building of their state, and the management of their country should be determined solely by the Iraqi people themselves, through elections conducted under the supervision of the United Nations. He cautioned against any disruptions to the process of national unity, as they would have severe repercussions for all segments and individuals within Iraq.

In response to a question regarding the potential establishment of a federation in Iraq, Khaddam stated that decisions concerning Iraq’s constitutional, legal, and political structure rest in the hands of the Iraqi people through free elections. He emphasized that no viewpoint can be adopted prior to the Iraqi people expressing their stance on this matter.

Addressing the Syrian-Turkish-Iranian coordination on the issue of Iraq, Khaddam explained that ongoing contacts are being made between the capitals of these countries, as well as among Arab nations. He highlighted the shared concern among all Arab countries, Iran, and Turkey regarding the situation in Iraq, with a unified call for its liberation, the transfer of power to the Iraqi people, and the end of the occupation.
