Former Syrian Vice President Abdul-Halim Khaddam called on President Bashar al-Assad to take responsibility and not to burden the people in the interest of their country. Khaddam, speaking to Alhurra TV on the first anniversary of the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, urged President Assad to appear before the international investigation committee and not to invoke sovereignty, stating that “sovereignty does not protect a murderer,” emphasizing that no state has absolute sovereignty.
Khaddam said that Hariri had served Syria greatly, and “many times we would task him with correcting the mistakes of Farouk al-Sharaa.”
