Syrian Deputy Prime Minister Abdul Halim Khaddam urged the Non-Aligned Group conferences to support the cancellation of the General Assembly resolution of 1949 that allowed Israel to join the organization. Khaddam also described current peace efforts in the Middle East as “nothing but a giant step toward war.”
He said the United States, which protected Israel militarily, was now protecting her politically through threats that offended all UN members, an apparent reference to warnings by members of the U.S. Congress and Administration that the expulsion or suspension of Israel would result in a severe lessening of American support for the world body.
