The Patriarchal residence in Bkerke witnessed extensive activity yesterday, marked by the general meeting presided over by His Beatitude Patriarch Khreish and attended by the heads of political parties, Maronite parliamentary blocs, and the superiors of religious orders.
Additionally, several side meetings were held, many of which were attended by Syrian Foreign Minister Mr. Abdel Halim Khaddam, Syrian Chief of Staff General Hikmat al-Shihabi, former President Camille Chamoun, and Sheikh Pierre Gemayel.
In addition to the statement issued after the meeting and the remarks by Minister Khaddam emphasizing that efforts are focused on eliminating all signs of disagreement between brothers, there were also “secret resolutions.” It was reported that these included the Patriarch undertaking external visits and the formation of a coordination committee to ensure the implementation of the statement’s provisions aimed at unifying positions, effectively creating a unified political leadership.
Sources among the attendees mentioned that Patriarch Khreish emphasized the unity of Lebanon, stating: “We are talking about a nation, not division. When we discuss national matters and matters of destiny, we must all set aside political issues and personal disputes.”
Mr. Khaddam’s talks with His Beatitude the Patriarch covered the decisions that could emerge from the Bkerke meeting. Mr. Khaddam expressed his hope that the participants would allow room for continued mediation and efforts toward a political solution in whatever decisions they make.
When Khaddam left the Patriarchal residence, journalists asked him about the mediation he was conducting between the Lebanese and Palestinians, the results of his contacts regarding the ongoing conflict, and whether partition was a solution.
He replied: “I did not find any indication from any of the parties I have spoken with that such a solution is being considered. Everyone has emphasized the need for excellent relations among the brothers and to work on removing all signs of the existing disputes between the different parties.”
Journalist: “There are areas of occupation in Lebanon that are outside of the state’s control.”
Khaddam: “Where?”
Journalist: “Tripoli and Sidon.”
Khaddam: “This statement aims to create confusion and stir division, and it is certainly sourced from Israel.”
Journalist: “Don’t you think the Palestinians have entered the game of dividing Lebanon (Lebanese Cyprus)?”
Khaddam: “The Palestinian resistance is the noblest and most sacred Arab revolution because it represents the aspirations of the oppressed and displaced Palestinian people to restore their national rights. Therefore, those who make such statements are enemies of the Arabs and enemies of the Palestinian cause. We have not observed any Palestinian leader or non-leader expressing a desire for such a view.”
Journalist: “There are factions that were not disciplined after the ceasefire decision. What is your opinion on this?”
Khaddam: “All factions were disciplined yesterday. If there were some shots fired here or there, they were from individuals, not from groups. These individuals still have tense nerves, and we need to reduce this tension and work to restore normal conditions and eliminate the tension because its continuation is the cause of explosions, and explosions lead to the destruction of Lebanon.”
Journalist: “Have you repeated the invitation for His Beatitude the Patriarch to visit Syria?”
Khaddam: “Yes, I have reiterated the invitation. President Hafez Assad has tasked me with renewing the invitation for His Beatitude the Patriarch to visit Syria, and His Beatitude is greatly respected in Syria.”
Journalist: “Did you reach a shared understanding in your meetings?”
Khaddam: “We reached shared convictions, and all parties must work with seriousness and sincerity. I will convey all of this to the other parties.”
At 10:15 AM, Minister Khaddam and General al-Shihabi left the Patriarchal residence after being warmly seen off by His Beatitude Patriarch Khreish. They boarded a helicopter that had brought them from the Ministry of Defense in the morning.
