Former Syrian Vice President Abdel Halim Khaddam, a dissident, has issued a warning about the fragmentation of Syria and the potential onset of sectarian warfare, which could trigger similar conflicts throughout the region. He has called for the creation of an international military alliance to save the country.
In a letter sent on Monday to U.S. President Barack Obama, French President Nicolas Sarkozy, British Prime Minister David Cameron, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, and U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon – a copy of which was obtained by United Press International – Khaddam expressed concern over the silence of some countries and the unexpected reluctance of others to address the situation in Syria.
Khaddam expressed hope that leaders “should work towards forming an international military coalition to save Syria and the region, considering the Iranian-Russian alliance aimed at controlling the Middle East region and its resources, particularly its oil reserves, international transport routes, and its strategic position between the three continents.”
He urged everyone to take responsibility, particularly those who advocate and respect human rights, emphasizing that “the world has become small.” In his letter to international leaders, he highlighted that “saving Syria means ensuring the security and stability of the region, international security and stability, and preserving existing relations and mutual interests between the countries of the region and other countries around the world, especially yours.”
