Abdul-Halim Khaddam, the former vice president of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, announced that he would unveil a comprehensive program for the transition to democracy in Syria.
Khaddam emphasized that there should be no distinction between the Syrian opposition inside and outside the country, and the suffering Syrian people constitute the fundamental basis of the opposition.
He described the Syrian people as the primary opposition, stating that they endure difficult living conditions due to poverty, unemployment, and security pressures.
These statements were made on the sidelines of a meeting held by leaders of the Syrian opposition abroad on Friday in the Belgian capital, Brussels, to discuss the formation of a united front to overthrow President Bashar al-Assad through democratic means.
The meeting was attended by Abdul-Halim Khaddam and Ali Sadreddine al-Bayanouni, the general observer of the Muslim Brotherhood.
Khaddam also mentioned that he held discussions with nationalists, liberals, Islamists, Kurds, and communists from the Syrian opposition, considering the role of the opposition abroad as assisting the masses in their quest to overcome their suffering.
Rejecting Foreign Intervention
On his part, Ali Sadreddine al-Bayanouni, in an exclusive interview with BBC, stated that one of the notable outcomes of this meeting is an agreement on a program for change and the establishment of a national front called the National Salvation Front.
Al-Bayanouni rejected specifying a certain timeframe for toppling the Syrian regime but expressed his belief that the regime lacks popularity and survives only with external protection.
He stated that if this protection is lifted, the Syrian regime will collapse.
Al-Bayanouni affirmed the rejection of foreign intervention in Syrian affairs, stating that change will not come through any military coups but by relying on the capabilities of the Syrian people.
