Mediators held surprise meetings Tuesday night with rebels and their Syrian backers in a renewed bid to quell a mutiny in the PLO before returning to Tunis for consultations with Yasser Arafat.

Khaled Fahoum, leader of the six-member team of mediators, said talks with Syrian Foreign Minister Abdel Halim Khaddam had been ‘very good’ and described talks with the rebel’s political leader Nimr Saleh as ‘constructive.’

Fahoum said he would return to Damascus Thursday or Friday to resume talks with the rebels after meeting in Tunis with Arafat, who was expelled from Syria for criticizing Damascus’ support for the rebels.
