Syria accused Lebanese President Amin Gemayel Tuesday of forming a military alliance with Israel and asking Tel Aviv to strike his Lebanese foes but it sent a final version of a new peace proposal to Beirut.
The accusation came after a meeting between Syrian Foreign Minister Abdul Halim Khaddam and Saudi mediator Rafik Hariri, who brought back Gemayel’s first reactions to the four-point Syrian plan which he took to Beirut Monday.
‘Gemayel has taken no final decision on the agreement,’ Lebanese Foreign Minister Elie Salem told Christian Phalange radio Tuesday.
Hariri, after meetings with Syrian officials, returned to Beirut carrying Syria’s final position on its plan for a meeting Wednesday with the Lebanese government amid reports the Saudis and Syrians had agreed on the pact.
Government sources in Beirut said the four-point Syrian plan called for Lebanon to drop a demand for the simultaneous withdrawal of Israeli and Syrian troops.
