Buthaina Shaaban, Minister of Expatriates and media spokeswoman for the tenth national conference of the ruling Arab Socialist Baath Party in Syria, confirmed that Abdul Halim Khaddam, Vice President of the Republic, is still a member of the national leadership.

The minister said that Khaddam attended the morning session of the conference and was discussed as a leadership member of the party, but she indicated that Khaddam's status would become clear on the last day of the conference. This came in response to the news that circulated about Khaddam’s request to be relieved of his official duties
Shaaban indicated that the start of the party’s tenth national conference means that the regional leadership and the central committee are dissolved until the last day of the conference in which the central committee will be elected. This committee, previously composed of 70 members, is scheduled to elect the current national leadership, which will be reduced from 21 members to 15.

Informed Syrian sources revealed that a heated discussion took place between Khaddam and Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk al-Sharaa during the conference, after which the former submitted a request to be relieved of his position.
