“The second general conference of the Syrian Salvation Front, held in the German capital Berlin, continues its proceedings. The conference, which commenced its activities yesterday, aims to make decisions on the political course for achieving change through peaceful means within Syria.

In this context, Abdul Halim Khaddam, the former vice president of the Syrian president, addressed the opening session yesterday, stating that the Front is working to unify the forces of the Syrian opposition in order to achieve two main goals: ‘peaceful change by overthrowing the dictatorial regime’ and the establishment of a modern civil democratic state based on citizenship.

Also participating in the opening session of the conference was the Syrian Kurdish leader Salah Badreddine, who spoke about the right of what he described as the Kurdish people in Syria ‘to express their pain to their Arab Syrian citizens and others.’

The proceedings of this conference will continue until Monday evening, with its decisions expected to be announced on Tuesday morning after the election of a new leadership for the Front. Around 140 Syrian opposition figures are participating in the conference, which is the second one following the founding conference held in London in June 2006.

It is anticipated that the conference will elect a new national salvation council comprising about thirty members, in addition to a new general secretariat that will function as the executive leadership of the Front.”
