The American Financial Times newspaper reported in its Saturday issue that the United Nations has presented detailed proposals to Syria and Israel for the renewal of negotiations between them.
Citing Western diplomatic sources, the newspaper stated that these proposals are part of undisclosed efforts to resume negotiations between the two countries, which have been suspended for over three years.
The United Nations has suggested that the talks be supervised by the United States due to its strong relations with Israel, as well as France due to its relations with Syria. Diplomats have pointed out that there are numerous obstacles to the resumption of negotiations.
It is worth noting that Syrian Vice President Abdel Halim Khaddam confirmed this week that Syria has informed Israel, via Turkey, of its readiness to resume talks. Khaddam clarified that Syria is prepared to renew negotiations with Israel from the point where they left off. Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul acknowledged that Turkey had conveyed the Syrian positions to Israel and the United States and handed them other relevant documents.
