Syrian Vice President Abdel Halim Khaddam stated today that ending the Israeli occupation and implementing United Nations resolutions are the only viable path towards stability in the region. Khaddam made these remarks in a statement to journalists following his meeting with an Iraqi delegation to discuss the American project known as the Greater Middle East. He expressed his perspective, saying, “The project aims to combat violence, but they seem to overlook the crimes committed by Israel in Palestine and the pressure it exerts on Arab countries.” He emphasized that these issues contribute to the regional tension and that ending the Israeli occupation is the key to fostering cooperation between the Greater Middle East and external parties. Regarding the European initiative, Khaddam stated, “No one can impose anything on Arabs, as reform and development are essential needs for both Arabs and non-Arabs. Life cannot remain static, and development is intertwined with the natural course of life. Arabs make their own choices and do not accept impositions.” Khaddam also mentioned that the Iraqi delegation discussed the plight of the Iraqi people and the future of Iraq. They agreed on the importance of preserving the unity of Iraqis as a means to alleviate suffering, regain Iraq’s independence and sovereignty, and liberate the country from foreign forces. He added that there is a collective desire for free elections under the supervision of the United Nations to establish a democratic Iraq where all Iraqis enjoy equal rights. Concerning the development of the Arab League, Khaddam referred to several ideas in this regard and mentioned an upcoming meeting of Arab foreign ministers to address these matters. He deemed it reasonable for Arab countries to consider enhancing the League and revisiting its charter, which was drafted in 1945. He further stated, “After more than half a century, new regulations should be established to strengthen Arab cooperation and promote Arab advancement. Contacts and coordination are taking place between Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Syria, and others in this regard. This is a natural course of action.”
