Syrian Vice President Abdel Halim Khaddam warned in an interview with the Saudi newspaper Okaz about the danger of Arab division at the upcoming Arab summit in Sharm el-Sheikh. He stated that if this division were to occur, it would provide justification for the United States to initiate a war against Iraq.

Khaddam further emphasized that there are numerous flaws within the Arab system, with the most significant being the failure to comply with the resolutions and Charter of the Arab League, along with a state of weakness. Overcoming this impasse can only be achieved by reverting to a commitment to these principles.
