Khaddam expects the fall of the Syrian regime in a few months
In an interview with the Turkish newspaper Sabah over the weekend, former Syrian Vice President Abdul-Halim Khaddam stated that an exile government would be formed in a few months, supported by the people, and would overthrow the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Khaddam, who was interviewed by the Turkish newspaper in Luxembourg, said, “We intend to form a temporary government after a few months to take over the rule in the country until we restore it to the position it deserves.” He added that this would happen with the support of the people and there would be no revolution, confirming that a fully democratic transitional phase would emerge after the fall of the existing regime.
The former vice president of the Syrian president, who has been in exile since his resignation in June of last year, mentioned being in contact with all opposition groups inside and outside Syria. He mentioned conducting consultations with the Kurds, the Muslim Brotherhood, high-ranking military personnel, and individuals with economic influence in Syria. He clarified that he has support from some individuals in the Baath Party, stating, “We share the same opinion about the change of the regime. You will see soon, if not in a few months, that this will be achieved.”
