Today, in Damascus, the fourth session of the General Conference of Arab Parties begins under the patronage of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. The Secretary-General of the conference, Abdulaziz Al-Sayyed, announced that in this session, three working papers would be discussed on the future of the Arab-Israeli conflict, support for Lebanon and Syria, internal reform, and democracy. Former Syrian Vice President Abdulhaleem Khaddam criticized the conference, questioning the benefit of sending a “message of support to a corrupt and oppressive regime that weakened the country, undermined national unity, impoverished the people, seized public and individual freedoms, and killed hundreds, if not thousands, of Syrians without trial or under an illegal court, monopolizing power while sidelining the role of the people and turning Syria into a large prison.”

He added, “Do not repeat the mistake that some of you made when depicting the former Iraqi leadership, assuming that the Arab masses would overthrow the ruling regimes if Iraq went to war. The war happened, and Iraq fell, torn and soaked in the blood of its sons, bleeding every day. The ruling regimes you spoke of did not fall; they persisted.”

Khaddam considered that Arab parties should not align with such positions that would harm the Syrian people by supporting the policies of the regime.
