Damascus, Tripoli — KUNA — Syrian Vice President Abdul Halim Khaddam announced yesterday that in discussions held in Syria with Saudi colleagues regarding Crown Prince Abdullah bin Abdulaziz’s initiative, they found that their ideas were aligned.

Khaddam told journalists yesterday in Tripoli (Libya) that “we agree with the Saudis on the restoration of occupied Arab lands and the withdrawal of Israeli forces to the lines of June 4, 1967. We also agree on the establishment of a Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital and on the issue of the return of Palestinian refugees as a fundamental matter. These issues, as we were told, are included in the Saudi ideas that will be presented at the summit as an initiative.”

Khaddam delivered a message from President Bashar al-Assad to Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, which addressed regional developments and the Beirut summit. After the meeting, the Syrian Vice President stated that there had been extensive and in-depth discussions about the situation in the region and the dangers threatening the Arab nation, particularly the Zionist threat.

He added that discussions also covered ways to ensure the success of the summit and unify Arab positions on core issues, expressing his belief that “significant efforts must be made at the summit to reach a unified Arab stance, support Arab solidarity, and create a new environment that helps Arabs face various and multiple dangers.”
