Syrian Vice President Abdel Halim Khaddam departed from Cairo after a brief visit, during which he conveyed an undisclosed message from Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad to his Egyptian counterpart, Hosni Mubarak. Khaddam also engaged in discussions with Egyptian Prime Minister Atif Ebeid, primarily focusing on the implementation of the natural gas pipeline project that would connect Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria.

According to a source close to the Egyptian presidency, Mubarak and Khaddam discussed the latest global and regional developments, including the Palestinian issue. Khaddam refrained from making any statements following the meeting.

Immediately after his meeting with Mubarak, Khaddam held talks with Egyptian Prime Minister Atif Ebeid. The Middle East News Agency reported that Khaddam discussed the progress of the extensive natural gas pipeline project, which aims to link Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria.

The Egyptian presidential source clarified that the discussions centered around strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries across various domains and activating the agreements signed within the framework of the Egyptian-Syrian Joint Supreme Committee.

In mid-March, Syria, Egypt, Jordan, and Lebanon collectively decided to adopt a land route for the natural gas pipeline, facilitating the transportation of natural gas from Egypt to the three Arab nations and Turkey.
