Abdul Halim Khaddam, Hafez al-Assad’s deputy, revealed the major role played by Saudi Arabia and an Arab coalition with America to pressure it to prevent Israel from waging a war against Syria.
Khaddam mentioned in his memoirs, published by Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper, that in the summer of 1981, Israel shot down two Syrian helicopters in the Bekaa Valley, which were on a combat mission against the “Lebanese Forces” in Zahle and Snine, Lebanon.
He added: "Syria responded by introducing anti-aircraft SAM missiles into the Bekaa Valley, and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin reacted by threatening Damascus to remove these missiles by (special means) unless Syria withdraws them."
Khaddam pointed out that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the Emirates, and others carried out “combat activities” with the American administration, especially the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
He added: "King Khalid bin Abdulaziz sent several letters to President Ronald Reagan, warning him of the consequences of supporting Israel in an attack launched against Syria, indicating that Saudi Arabia and all Arabs will stand side by side with Syria."
"Khaddam" continued: The Crown Prince at the time, "Prince Fahd bin Abdulaziz, if Israel attacks Syria, all Arabs will fight with and alongside Syria."
