Syrian Vice President Abdulhaleem Khaddam Sunday stressed his country’s keenness on bolstering ties and support for Iraq to regain its role in the Arab world and beyond and to end foreign military existence.

Khaddam made these remarks during a meeting with member of the Iraqi Governing Council (IGC) Ayad Allawi who arrived here on an unannounced visit.

An official statement said Khaddam emphasized the importance of strengthening national unity in Iraq and to foil any attempt to undermine solidarity.

The two officials noted national unity is the basis for Iraq to restore its sovereignty and independence and to end the need for foreign forces. It is also crucial, they said, for the establishment of all institutions in a state of constitution and free elections.

Allawi, secretary general of the Iraqi National Accord, said Syria’s cooperation and support of the Iraqi people in the current circumstances are vital. Allawi’s visit follows a visit by Head of the Iraqi National Tribal Council (NTC) Hussein Ali Al-Shalan and several NTC members, four days ago.

The delegation had held talks with Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad, Vice President Khaddam and Prime Minister Muhammad Naji Utri in addition to Foreign Minister Farouq Al-Shara
