Syria and Iran will soon sign an economic agreement and start negotiations on closer cultural links following talks between the two countries which opened on Saturday (16 August).

The news was announced to reporters by the Syrian Foreign Minister, Abdel-Halim Khaddam after details of the agreement had been finalised with the Iranian Foreign Minister, Abbas Khalatbari.

Mr. Khalatbari, who started a three-day visit to Damascus on Saturday, also had talks on the international situation and bi-lateral relations.

Mr. Khalatbari said his talks with the Syrians were held in an atmosphere of mutual understanding which promised further developments in relations between the two countries.

He said the talks had covered all matters of common interest in the economic, cultural and information fields.

Mr. Khalatbari added: “A bright future is in store for relations between Iran and Syria.”
