Abdul Halim Khaddam, the Secretary-General of the General Authority for Supporting the Syrian Revolution, called on the Arab League to make decisions that would undermine the legitimacy of the Syrian regime and its president.

Khaddam, the former Vice President of Syria, also urged Arab countries, in a statement distributed from the organization’s headquarters in Paris on Saturday, to adopt other decisions, including sanctions such as freezing the Syrian regime’s membership in the Arab League, prohibiting financial, economic, and commercial dealings with it, and freezing the financial assets of the regime and its associates in Arab countries.

He appealed to the Arab League to impose sanctions similar to those adopted by the European Union, whether economic or political, on the Syrian president and regime symbols. He expressed hope that the Arab League would make decisions during the meeting scheduled later on Saturday that would respond to the aspirations of the Syrians for liberation, determining their destiny, and freeing themselves from a regime that has intensified its oppression and corruption, continuing its acts of killing, destruction, torture, arrests, invading cities and villages, violating the sanctity of homes, and infringing on the basic rights of citizens for nine months.

Khaddam also urged the Council of the League, which will meet for the second time to discuss the critical situation in Syria and the results of the recent initiative, to realize that any attempt to float or maintain the regime would pose a major danger not only to Syria but also to the entire region.
