Yesterday, Syrian Vice President Abdel Halim Khaddam received the governor of the Argentine state of Cordoba, Mestri Ramon Bautista, along with his accompanying delegation. The meeting took place in the presence of Argentina’s Ambassador to Damascus, Juan Antonio Baroud. The discussion centered around bilateral relations between the two countries.
Prior to this meeting, Bautista had met with Mohammed Al-Emadi, the Minister of Economy and Foreign Trade, Mohammed Zuhair Al-Taghlibi, the Governor of Damascus, and Rateb Al-Shallah, the President of Damascus Chamber of Commerce. The talks focused on exploring avenues to enhance relations between Syria and Argentina, particularly with regards to the state of Cordoba.
It is noteworthy that Argentina is home to a significant Syrian community that traces its origins to migrations that commenced in the last century. The community holds a prominent position in the political, economic, and social spheres, contributing to the vibrant Lebanese diaspora. The current President of the Argentine Republic, Carlos Menem, hails from Syrian descent and made a visit to his ancestral homeland three years ago.
