A French judicial source has revealed that former Vice President of the Syrian Republic, Abdel Halim Khaddam, has filed a lawsuit against Rifat Al-Assad, brother of the late President Hafez al-Assad, holding him accountable for the massacre carried out by the Syrian regime in Hama in 1982.
During an interview with Radio Sawa, Khaddam affirmed that he had no involvement in the internal affairs of Syria during the events in Hama. He stated, “As the Minister of Foreign Affairs, I had absolutely no involvement in any internal events during that period. Syria was engaged in various conflicts, such as the conflict with the regime in Iraq, the crisis in Lebanon, and the issue with Egypt. My entire focus was directed towards foreign policy.”
He further added, “Yes, we were aware of what was happening, but we had no means to alter the course of events. Resigning in such an atmosphere would have resulted in the resigned individual facing one of two scenarios: either being murdered or imprisoned and sentenced to death. In such circumstances, how would resignation provide support or assistance to the Syrian people?”
