Syrian Vice President Abdel Halim Khaddam emphasized the priority of the relationship with Turkey and called for lifting the blockade on Iraq, which he asserted does not pose a military threat to any party.

Khaddam described the current relations between Syria and Turkey as good and in a better condition compared to twenty years ago.

During a reception for a group of journalists and media officials from Turkey who are currently visiting Syria, Khaddam expressed his hope that this visit would provide an opportunity for a better understanding of Syria. He wished that they would see for themselves that the government and the people of Syria are ready to improve relations with Turkey, highlighting the historical dimension in Arab-Turkish relations dating back to the Ottoman era.

Khaddam added, stating that historical heritage and common interests compel us to earnestly explore ways to enhance our bilateral relations. He pointed out that some difficulties may arise but emphasized that they should not be obstacles to these bilateral relations. He stated that we are now living in a changing world, and the countries of the region must collaborate with each other, as the big fish devours the small one.

Khaddam stated that during his visit to Turkey last November, he sensed a willingness to improve bilateral relations. Responding to a question about the delay in signing the joint principles declaration, which is expected to outline the broad lines of relations between Turkey and Syria, Khaddam mentioned that communications are currently underway between the foreign ministries of both countries on this matter. He expressed hope that these communications would be concluded soon and stressed the importance of various institutions in both countries making efforts to enhance bilateral relations in all areas.

When asked about the issue of sanctions imposed on Iraq, Syrian Vice President Abdel Halim Khaddam, in statements published in Turkey, stated that Arab countries agree that these sanctions are causing real suffering for the Iraqi people. He added that Syria believes these sanctions harm the entire region due to their repercussions and effects on the people of the region.

Khaddam sharply criticized the policy of major powers with double standards, stating that it is a source of concern for the region in general. He pointed out that Iraq made a mistake by occupying Kuwait and withdrew from Kuwait as a result of a United Nations decision. The powers that attacked Iraq claimed they did so for the security of Kuwait and the Gulf countries, while ignoring the Israeli occupation of the territories of three Arab countries and clearly refusing to implement United Nations resolutions.

Khaddam added that the clear reality for everyone is that Israel kills Palestinians every day, and it has committed similar acts against the Lebanese. He questioned why sanctions are not imposed on Israel if the real goal is to prevent threats to others.
