Syrian Vice President Abdel Halim Khaddam emphasized that the current issue in Iraq stems from the occupation. He expressed his confidence in the resilience of the Iraqi people to overcome their adversaries.

Speaking to journalists during his attendance at the funeral council for Ayatollah Mohammad Baqer Al-Hakim, the Chairman of the Supreme Council of the Islamic Revolution in Iraq, held at Sayeda Zeinab Shrine, the Syrian Vice President asserted that those responsible for the crime that claimed Al-Hakim’s life should be held accountable. He stated, “We must await the unfolding events in the coming days.”

When asked about the possibility of a civil war in Iraq, Khaddam responded, “The Iraqi people possess a strong sense of patriotism and love for their country. While there may be attempts to ignite discord, we have faith that our Iraqi brothers will triumph over all those who seek to undermine Iraq’s unity, freedom, and independence.”

Addressing the overall situation in Iraq, the Syrian Vice President remarked, “The root of the problem lies in the occupation. Restoring sovereignty to Iraq, establishing a democratic Iraqi state, and allowing the participation of all Iraqis in shaping their own future will guarantee security and stability for Iraq and the wider region.”

When questioned about whether the Americans have sought advice from neighboring countries, including Syria, Khaddam replied, “There have been no discussions on this matter between us and the Americans. However, they are aware of our stance, which emphasizes the importance of safeguarding Iraq’s independence and sovereignty and the withdrawal of foreign forces from Iraqi territory.”
