“The traitor is the one who was the army commander and told many that he was a soldier in Hafez al-Assad’s army.”

Former Syrian Vice President Abdel Halim Khaddam yesterday wished that President Emile Lahoud, whom he described as having “forcibly extended his term,” would have more “respect for his presidential position and for himself.”
Khaddam said in a statement issued by his media office yesterday, “Once again, Lahoud accuses President Hafez al-Assad of being naive, foolish, weak, and stupid,” asking, “Was Khaddam visiting Beirut and meeting with presidents and politicians, and under the spotlight of the media, coming secretly and without the president’s knowledge? If President Hafez al-Assad did not know What was Khaddam doing when he watched him on television, together with politicians in Lebanon? Why did he not hold him accountable? Was it because he was weak or because President Hafez al-Assad was naive and foolish and did not know what was going on?

Khaddam asked in the statement: Can Lahoud “tell us what are the nationalist actions of President Hafez al-Assad in Lebanon and what are the subversive actions of Khaddam? Does Lahoud believe that any of the officials is moving without his knowledge and without his knowledge? If he believes so, we excuse him.” According to what he said on the lips of his media office, because this means that he does not know. And if what the media office said on his lips is not true, then we excuse him because he is poor and does not know what is going on around him, and we also excuse him if he wanted to cover up his mistake in his last statement after he was reprimanded by Bashar al-Assad because the subordinate "He can only submit to his superior's directions."

The statement said, "Yes, there was Syrian intervention above the table, not under it, and all people knew that. When Khaddam was making his communications, this was done in agreement with President Hafez al-Assad, and all the Lebanese politicians who were communicating with him knew that. Politicians from different directions would come to his office, including presidential candidates." The Republic, as he was communicating with the candidates for prime minister and the presidents Rashid Solh and Omar Karami and discussed with them their assignment to head the ministry. How was all this going on and President Hafez al-Assad did not know? And if he did not agree with him, how could he accept that? Was he a figurehead and did he want Lahoud to say that? Everyone knows that President Hafez al-Assad was neither weak nor foolish nor naive.”

He wondered: “Who formed the first, second, third and fourth government of General Lahoud? Did he form it or did the list come to him from Damascus? It was carried to him by Major General Ghazi Kanaan and sometimes Rustum Ghazali,” noting that Lahoud “accuses Khaddam of desertion and treason, but Khaddam left the country and did not flee.” He was bid farewell by Bashar al-Assad, who assigned him to work on improving relations with France, and Khaddam went out to work on changing the regime

Khaddam's media office stressed in its statement that the traitor "is the one who was the army commander and told many people that he was a soldier in Hafez al-Assad's army without taking into account that such an opportunistic statement does not serve President Hafez al-Assad, and treason is when he breaks his constitutional oath and agrees to receive instructions from... Before Major General Ghazi Kanaan, then before Rustom Ghazali, in addition to the orders that Bashar al-Assad issued to him, and the traitor is the one who receives instructions from Ghazali to appoint general directors and senior employees in the state.”
