“A delegation of Lebanese pro-Iranian Shiite groups visited Damascus yesterday, where they met with Syrian Vice President Abdul Halim Khaddam for about two hours.
The delegation included leaders of Hezbollah, such as Ibrahim Al-Amin, and a representative from the Assembly of Muslim Scholars, Sheikh Maher Hamoud. The meeting, which took place in a friendly and positive atmosphere, discussed the situation in Lebanon, especially the unity of Muslims against Israel and its regional projects. They also discussed means to prevent the division of Lebanon, according to a Shiite source.
This visit comes two weeks after an extraordinary conference was held in Beirut by pro-Iranian formations, where they broke their usual silence regarding Lebanon’s internal situation and aligned themselves with the pro-Syria allies in Lebanon.
Observers believe that this visit is taking place at a time when tensions persist between Hezbollah and the Amal Movement. The Shiite groups aim to return to South Lebanon, where they suspended their military presence last April after four days of fighting.”
