Former Syrian Vice President Abdel Halim Khaddam has stated that the Syrian-Israeli negotiations lack seriousness. Their objective is to maintain a state of peace and non-war, which benefits the Syrian regime by allowing them to enforce a state of emergency and prevent any significant changes in Syria. Additionally, Israel seeks to sustain a state of tension among Israelis due to the concerns it raises.
In a commentary by the Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Seyassah regarding Hezbollah’s recently announced political document, Khaddam asserts that it offers nothing new. He believes that Hezbollah’s retention of weapons for an indefinite period hinders the establishment of a state.
Khaddam anticipates that MP Walid Jumblatt, the President of the Democratic Meeting, will refrain from visiting Syria. He argues that the Damascus regime would not benefit from this visit, and cultural heritage may serve as an obstacle. Furthermore, he highlights that Prime Minister Saad Hariri’s visit to Damascus will not resolve political differences or impact the International Tribunal for Lebanon, as the tribunal was established through a resolution of the United Nations Security Council.
Furthermore, Khaddam suggests that the West faces a significant problem with Iran. These countries hold the belief that separating the Syrian regime from Iran would weaken Iran itself, diminish and weaken Hezbollah, and isolate Hamas. Consequently, they have pursued this approach without thoroughly discussing the potential success of such actions.
