Abdul Halim Khaddam, former Deputy President of Syria, said from Paris that the Syrian regime is no longer capable of continuing now, persisting in repression and killing. He predicts that the Syrian regime will fall within a few months, pointing out that the Syrian army is beginning to disintegrate and feel fatigue. The loyal officers wonder where Bashar al-Assad, his brother Maher, and their family are leading us.
Khaddam, in a dialogue from Paris with the Egyptian channel “Al-Hayat 1,” emphasized that the Assad regime is trying to appear strong, but it is fearful, and its fate is that of tyrants worldwide. As for the Syrian people, he believes they are capable of continuing and challenging with the strength of resilience and sacrifice from the Syrian revolutionary force.
He pointed out that the request to send Arab forces to Syria is reminiscent of the situation in Lebanon during the civil war days, and its intention is to perpetuate the bloodshed, giving negative results, such as providing the regime with more opportunities, scheming, and plotting to kill innocent Syrian civilians. He clarified that the Syrian crisis will not be resolved without international intervention.
Khaddam insisted that the tragic situation in Syria requires pressure on major countries to make an international decision. He rejected the proposal for Arab intervention in form and substance. Therefore, major countries, seeing the Arab League hesitant and unable to make a decision, will not intervene to resolve the crisis.
He said, “The Arab League must exert pressure on major countries to form an international coalition that moves militarily to resolve the Syrian crisis.”
