Syrian Vice President Abdul Halim Khaddam emphasized that the threats and pressures exerted against his country will not deter it from continuing its national and patriotic policies. Khaddam stated in remarks today, following his meeting with a delegation representing the Council of Elders of Iraq, led by its Secretary-General Aqeel Al-Khatib, that all doors are open to developing relations between Syria and Iraq. It is natural for both countries to work towards enhancing their relations in various fields, with a priority being assistance to the Iraqi people in reclaiming their sovereignty and building their independent, fully sovereign state.

A Syrian official statement issued after today’s meeting confirmed Syria’s solidarity with the Iraqi people to overcome their ordeal and stressed the necessity for Iraqis to adhere to their national unity. The statement indicated that Khaddam listened to an explanation from the delegation members about the daily sufferings of the Iraqi people, and he noted the delegation’s appreciation for Syria’s stances on Arab issues and its support for the Iraqi people.
