Last week, Syrian Vice President Abdul Halim Khaddam met with the Deputy of Islamic References, Secretary-General of the Assembly of Shia Scholars in Kuwait, Mr. Mohammad Baqir al-Mahri, and his accompanying delegation.
During the meeting, they discussed the risks and challenges facing the Arab and Islamic nations. Khaddam assured the delegation that Syria’s stance on Kuwait’s issues remains firm, reaffirming that Syria would again stand against any attempt by Saddam to invade Kuwait.
Al-Mahri expressed his sincere gratitude to the Syrian leadership for supporting Kuwait’s just causes, particularly the issue of Kuwaiti prisoners and detainees in Iraqi jails. He urged the Syrian brothers to press the Iraqi regime to release them and return them to their families, emphasizing the need to resolve this humanitarian issue.
He also extended congratulations to the Vice President and to Syria—its President, government, and people—on the occasion of the anniversary of the corrective movement led by the late President Hafez al-Assad, wishing Syria further progress and prosperity.
During the visit, the delegation also met with the Grand Mufti of Syria, Sheikh Kiftiro, where they discussed various Islamic issues, including attempts to distort the image of Islam. Sheikh Kiftiro stressed the importance of clarifying and defining the true and realistic teachings of Islam, highlighting the responsibility of religious scholars and clerics to thwart the efforts of Islam’s enemies. He pointed out that Islam is a religion of peace and opposed to all forms of terrorism.
