Former Syrian Vice President Abdel Halim Khaddam has pointed out that “the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon, made a mistake by sending an envoy to carry out a project aimed at resolving the Syrian crisis.”
Khaddam explained that this mistake arises from granting international legitimacy to the Syrian regime, which violates the Charter of the United Nations. The Charter condemns dictatorial regimes that deny their people the right to self-determination. According to Khaddam, the project undertaken by the envoy contradicts the legitimate rights of the Syrian people.
He highlighted that the project, as announced by the international envoy, focuses on halting the fighting in a part of Aleppo city, while the regime’s military forces, with the support of Russia and Iran, continue to employ all means of force at their disposal.
Khaddam stressed that if this project were to be implemented, it would lead to the escalation of extremism, the fragmentation of Syria’s geographical and political unity, and evoke the plight of the Palestinian people, reminiscent of the role played by certain major countries in that tragic situation.
He pointed out that during World War II, the Syrian regime occupied parts of Europe, and those who opposed the aggression transformed into resistance fighters who took up arms against the Nazi armies. This included individuals from various political ideologies. Khaddam questioned whether it is fair to label them as extremists. He asserted that anyone who defends their people, freedom, and the integrity of their homeland is a fighter deserving of respect and appreciation. Therefore, it is essential for all Syrians to work together, united, to save their country and restore freedom, justice, and equality through a democratic system.
Khaddam emphasized that the mission of the UN envoy does not align with the suffering and rights of the Syrian people. He believes that this project has failed to consider the unity of the Syrian population and their right to self-determination. Consequently, Khaddam stated that no Syrian can cooperate with this project due to its objectives, which contradict their national aspirations.
