Syrian Vice President Abdel Halim Khaddam has issued a warning regarding the potential consequences of an American military intervention in Iraq, emphasizing that such action would have grave implications for the entire Middle East region.

Following a one-and-a-half-hour meeting with French President Jacques Chirac at the Elysee Palace, Khaddam underscored the shared perspectives between France and Syria on the matter of Iraq. Both countries call for the establishment of security and stability in the region and advocate against any military operations in Iraq.

President Chirac expressed his opposition to any “unilateral” actions, emphasizing that the responsibility of deciding on a potential intervention in Iraq, if Baghdad continues to reject the return of disarmament inspectors, lies with the UN Security Council.
