The deputies Nasri al-Maalouf and Nadim Salem visited the Syrian capital, where they met with the Syrian Vice President, Mr. Abdul Halim Khaddam.
It was planned for them to meet with the Syrian President, Hafez al-Assad, but the recent developments regarding the Gulf situation and President al-Assad’s preoccupation with it prevented that, leading him to delegate Mr. Khaddam to visit Tehran while receiving the Lebanese parliamentary delegation.
Sources from the delegation, which returned yesterday evening and briefed President Harawi on the results of their talks, confirmed that they sensed Syria’s keenness, despite the Syrian officials’ preoccupation with the Gulf events, to complete the steps and measures outlined in the government statement.
Mr. Khaddam reiterated Syria’s unequivocal support for Lebanese legitimacy and its government statement, according to the sources. However, other political sources expected Syrian interest in the Lebanese situation to diminish in the next 48 hours at least, due to the importance of regional developments, especially between Iraq and Iran.
