On November 5, 2011, Paris witnessed the founding meeting of the National Organization to Support the Syrian Revolution, led by Abdel Halim Khaddam, the former Syrian Vice President, with 61 opposition members residing abroad. The founders affirmed their rejection of any dialogue with the Syrian regime, while supporting any possible means to overthrow it, including the movement of the Syrian National Army and foreign military intervention.
The establishment of the Authority came days after Damascus approved the Arab League plan to withdraw weapons from cities and villages and start a dialogue with the opposition. The Commission criticized the position of the Syrian National Council for accepting the idea of dialogue.
According to the founders’ statements, the idea of dialogue aims to support the Syrian revolution rather than its “leadership,” while focusing its activities on the political and media frameworks, in addition to providing means of material support for the Syrian revolution.
