A Saudi Government minister met President Hafez al-Assad of Syria today in what was seen here as a new attempt to mediate the dispute within the Palestine Liberation Organization.
Education Minister Abdul Aziz al-Abdullah al-Khuwaiter gave Mr. Assad a message from King Fahd, the official Syrian press agency reported. It gave no details of the message or of talks between Mr. Assad and the Saudi envoy.
Dr. Khuwaiter visited Syria on July 1 with two Algerian envoys for talks with Foreign Minister Abdel Halim Khaddam in what the Saudis said was an effort to heal the two-month-old split in Yasir Arafat’s guerrilla group, Al Fatah. The envoys did not meet Mr. Assad during that visit.
