The General Supervisor of the Muslim Brotherhood in Syria, Dr. Sadr al-Din Bayanouni, met yesterday in Brussels with the former Vice President of the Syrian Republic, Abdul Haleem Khaddam.

Bayanouni told Al-Quds Al-Arabi that he agreed with Khaddam on a common vision based on working with all Syrian national forces, including those who signed the Damascus Declaration, to save Syria from its current situation.

Both parties agreed that the change is the responsibility of the Syrians alone, emphasizing the rejection of external intervention and denying any resemblance to the Iraqi opposition that aided the United States in the occupation of Iraq.

A source in Khaddam’s office stated that talks were held with Ali Sadr al-Din Bayanouni, the General Supervisor of the Muslim Brotherhood in Syria, in Brussels on Tuesday and Wednesday. In a phone call with Reuters’ Beirut office, the source mentioned an agreement on a common vision to rescue Syria from the crisis caused by the regime.

It was agreed to contact leaders of other opposition groups inside and outside Syria to formulate a joint action plan. The source also mentioned that both leaders rejected any foreign intervention in Syria, emphasizing that the responsibility for changing the corrupt regime in Syria lies solely with the Syrian people.

Sources in Paris reported ongoing communication and mutual admiration between Bayanouni and Khaddam throughout the past month. The choice of the meeting place was influenced by Bayanouni’s inability to travel to Paris due to not obtaining a French entry visa. Therefore, the meeting was agreed upon in Brussels as a central location between the two countries. These sources indicated the existence of two currents within the Syrian Muslim Brotherhood movement, one leaning towards dialogue with the regime, and another opposing, pushing towards democracy, pluralism, and dialogue with opposition forces internally and externally. Bayanouni is currently positioned between these two currents.
