BEIRUT — Visiting Syrian Vice President Abdel Halim Khaddam said Saturday his country was awaiting talks between Arab and U.S. officials before deciding whether to resume the peace conference with Israel.’We hope the region is approaching peace, but we have to wait for contacts by the Arab parties with the U.S. administration,’ Khaddam told reporters before meeting Lebanese President Elias Hrawi, Prime Minister Rafik Hariri and Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri in Zahle, 26 miles east of Beirut.

Khaddam said foreign ministers of Syria, Lebanon, Jordan and the Palestinians will meet Friday in Damascus to discuss their participation in the next round of Middle East peace talks, due to begin April 20 in Washington.

‘In the light of these contacts and meeting, we will decide the next step,’ said Khaddam, who was accompanied by Syrian chief of staff Hekmat Al Chehabi.

‘We will all abide by what the Arab parties will decide,’ Khaddam said.

He said he hoped the United States would play a positive role in the negotiations and act with ‘honesty and equality between the various parties.’
