Abdelhalim Khaddam, the Syrian Vice-President and Foreign Affairs Minister, spent several days in Algeria last week talking with Algerian leaders.
In his talks with President Boumedienne, the Syrian minister discussed the Middle East situation–particularly activity on the Syria-Israel border. He also held lengthy talks with his opposite number, Foreign Affairs Minister Abdelaziz Bouteflika, and their talks continued right up to the Syrian visitor’s departure at the airport.
The Foreign Ministers of Syria and Algeria continued their discussions right to the end on Saturday.
They sat in the airport lounge at Algiers, continuing the topics that had occupied them for three days. Syrian Foreign Minister Abdelhalim Khaddam — on the left — and Abdelaziz Bouteflika of Algeria had analyzed the Middle East situation.
M. Khaddam had also met the Algerian president, Colonel Houari Boumedienne. They’d gone into the latest events on the border between Syria and Israel. President Boumedienne gave a fresh pledge of Algeria’s support for Syria in its continuing conflict with Israel. M. Khaddam is touring Arab capitals seeking closer help in the crisis.
