Today, the Iraqi Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs, Adnan al-Janabi, arrived in Damascus along with his accompanying delegation. He met with the Syrian Vice President Abdul-Halim Khaddam. Syrian sources reported that al-Janabi delivered a letter from the Iraqi Prime Minister Iyad Allawi to the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
This falls within the framework of coordination and regional Iraqi consultations in preparation for the upcoming international conference on Iraq, which is scheduled to take place in Sharm El Sheikh soon.
Al-Janabi’s message to Assad comes after strong statements he made in Europe, urging Europeans to pressure Syria to cease “interfering in Iraqi affairs.” It appears that Iyad Allawi has also sent messages to Iran and regional countries expected to attend the Sharm El Sheikh conference. Iraqi sources suggest that Allawi messages shed light on the current situation in Fallujah, among other matters.
