Two Syrian envoys left Wednesday on a tour to discuss the Middle East peace process with European leaders and give Syria’s view that Israelis policies have a ‘negative impact’ on peace prospects, Syrian sources said.
Vice President Abdel Halim Khaddam and Foreign Minister Farouk Sharaa were to visit France, Britain, Germany, Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands and Italy, the sources said. They were scheduled to meet Thursday in Paris with French President Jacques Chirac and Foreign Minister Herve de Charette, who is expected to visit the Middle East early in March.
The envoys would tell European officials that ‘the practices of the Israeli government of Binyamin Netanyahu (have a) negative impact on the peace process, especially the refusal of (his) government to resume peace negotiations’ with Syria from last year’s point of termination, the sources said.
They will also ask European leaders to ‘back Syria’s position and exert pressures on the Israeli side to return to the negotiation table based on international resolutions.’ Peace talks between Israel and Syria broke off a year ago after suicide bombings in Israel killed scores of people. The negotiations were snarled over Syria’s demand that Israel withdraw from the Golan Heights, captured during the 1967 Arab-Israeli War.
