The Terrorism Court in Syria has issued a death sentence for Abdelhalim Khaddam, the former Vice President of the Republic, along with the confiscation of all his movable and immovable assets.

The verdict is subject to cancellation on the condition that Abdelhalim Khaddam surrenders voluntarily to the Syrian authorities, where he will be retried. If he is apprehended, the death sentence will be executed because the judgment will have acquired finality in accordance with the provisions of Article 6 of the Terrorism Court Law, which states: “In absentia judgments issued by the court are not subject to retrial if the convicted person is apprehended unless he surrenders voluntarily.”

Similar judgments against other Syrian opposition figures, whose cases have been previously referred to the Terrorism Court, are expected to be issued in due course.
