Syrian Vice President Abdel Halim Khaddam received a letter today addressed to President Bashar Al-Assad from Iraqi Prime Minister Iyad Allawi. The message was delivered by Adnan Janabi, the Iraqi Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs, while his entourage accompanied him during his visit. A statement issued by the office of the Syrian Vice President stated that Allawi’s letter pertains to the situation in Iraq.
Janabi’s visit is part of the Iraqi government’s efforts to engage with Arab capitals and convey messages to their leaders regarding the security situation in Iraq and the arrangements for the upcoming Sharm El-Sheikh International Conference on Iraq, scheduled for the 22nd and 23rd of this month.
In line with this, Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari visited Cairo, where he held talks with Egyptian officials about the Sharm El-Sheikh conference and the military operations in Falluja. The visit of the Iraqi delegations coincides with a diplomatic move by Syria towards the conference. Syrian Foreign Minister Farouq Al-Shara visited Cairo, followed by Turkey and Iran, to deliver messages from Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad concerning the preparations for the Sharm El-Sheikh conference, which will involve the participation of neighboring countries.
