Former dissident Syrian Vice President Abdel Halim Khaddam has accused his country’s regime of utilizing the emergency law over the past 45 years to kill and expel more than 300,000 Syrians.

In a recent letter addressed to Syrians, Khaddam promised a “close meeting” and highlighted that the regime employed the emergency law as a means to safeguard its own interests. He emphasized that at the time of its declaration in Syria, there was no state of war, armed rebellion, threat to public security, or natural disaster. Despite these circumstances, the regime issued over 300,000 customary orders of arrest, confiscation, and deportation.
