Abdul-Halim Khaddam, the former Vice President of Syria, discussed with a delegation from Iraqi tribes and reiterated Syria’s support for the Iraqi people’s liberation, independence, and the construction of their state on the entirety of their national territory. He emphasized the importance of national unity and Iraqi solidarity to face the current challenges Iraq is experiencing, aiming to alleviate its suffering and pains caused by the occupation of its land. Khaddam clarified that the Iraqi people are the only ones entitled to determine their destiny, build their state and future, and manage their country through elections supervised by the United Nations. He warned against any disruption in the process of national unity, as it would have serious repercussions on all Iraqis, regardless of their backgrounds.
In response to a question about the possibility of establishing federalism in Iraq, Khaddam stated that all matters related to the constitutional, legal, and political structure of Iraq are decided by the Iraqi people through free elections. No one can adopt any viewpoint before the Iraqi people express their opinion on this matter. Regarding Syrian-Turkish-Iranian coordination on the Iraqi issue, Khaddam explained that there are communications taking place between the capitals of these countries and Arab countries on this matter. All Arab countries, as well as Iran and Turkey, are concerned about the situation in Iraq and call for its liberation, transferring power to the Iraqi people, and ending the occupation.
