Khaddam…the proper approach to stability in the region is to achieve peace

Deputy Syrian President Abdel Halim Khaddam affirmed in Ankara today that the proper approach to stability and security in the region is through achieving a just and comprehensive peace.

The Syrian news agency quoted Khaddam as saying during his meeting in Ankara today with Turkish President Najdat Sezer that both the Turkish and Syrian sides agree that security and stability are achieved through a just and comprehensive peace. He added that he conveyed a message from Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to the Turkish president regarding bilateral relations, the situation in the region, issues of mutual interest, and ways to deepen cooperation and enhance relations between the two countries in all fields.

He also discussed with him the situation in the Middle East and the ongoing tensions and various possibilities, confirming that the perspectives were completely aligned. He said that the interests of both countries require the development of relations within the framework of a cooperation agreement that will be signed soon, specifying the principles of this cooperation, followed by the preparation of a comprehensive agreement that will form the basis of relations between the two countries in economic, political, and security fields, leading to renewed and continuous cooperation.

Responding to a question about the visit of the Syrian president to Turkey, Khaddam said that President Sezer renewed the invitation and that this visit would contribute to the advancement of relations between the two countries. Regarding the security issue, Khaddam said that there is extensive cooperation between the agencies that serves the interests of both parties.

Regarding the Turkish position on the Arab-Israeli conflict, Khaddam explained to the Turkish president the Syrian position regarding the current crisis, and that the Turkish president is fully aware of all aspects of the conflict, and that both sides agree that security and stability are achieved through peace.
